New York drivers are stepping into slushy sidewalks and wet pavement this morning as light snow showers drift across the Southern Tier. At 31 degrees, flakes melt on contact in spots, but untreated roads could turn slick fast as temperatures hover near freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday. Snow showers increase through the day, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation and highs near 32 degrees. Minor accumulations remain under one inch, yet bursts of heavier snow could briefly reduce visibility on I-81 and Route 17.

Snow becomes more likely late today into tonight, with a 60 percent chance and lows dropping to 21 degrees. That sharp dip raises concern for flash freezing. Melted snow may refreeze on bridges and overpasses after sunset. Slow down during the evening commute and allow extra braking distance.

Thursday stays cloudy and colder, with another chance of snow showers and highs near 28 degrees. Winds from the northwest add a biting feel. Skies clear Thursday night, and temperatures tumble to around 14 degrees.

Relief arrives Friday with partial sunshine and highs near 32. Valentine’s Weekend looks quieter. Saturday reaches 35 under mostly cloudy skies, and Sunday turns partly sunny with highs near 38. Early next week moderates further, with readings pushing near 40 and mid-40s by Tuesday. Longer-range trends favor a broader warm-up, with temperatures running above average across much of the country.
