Oakland, Maryland – Roads in the higher terrain of Garrett County and the Potomac Highlands could turn slick before sunrise Wednesday as freezing drizzle and light snow develop by 3 a.m., just ahead of the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for Western Garrett County in Maryland and Western Grant and Western Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Snow totals will remain light, up to 1 inch, with a light glaze of ice possible. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, strong enough to snap small branches and create isolated power disruptions.
The combination of icy surfaces and gusty winds may impact travel along U.S. Route 219 near Oakland, U.S. 50 through Grant County and mountain roads near Franklin and Bayard. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first.
Occasional freezing drizzle may persist into early afternoon before tapering, though additional snow showers could redevelop Wednesday night into Thursday.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling. Conditions improve after 3 p.m., but slick spots may linger into the evening as temperatures remain near freezing.
