Utqiaġvik, Alaska – Overlapping winter hazards are affecting Alaska’s North Slope, where extreme cold and blizzard conditions are expected to continue through Wednesday evening, creating dangerous travel conditions along Arctic coastal routes and the Dalton Highway.

According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, cold weather products remain in effect across the North Slope, with temperatures ranging from the 30s to 50s below zero. Wind chills are expected to plunge into the 60s and 70s below zero, posing a serious risk of frostbite in minutes for exposed skin.

In addition to the extreme cold, a Blizzard Warning has been issued for the northwestern Arctic Coast, while Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for portions of the central and eastern Arctic Coast. Forecasters warn that blowing snow may reduce visibility to one-half mile or less, with occasional drops to one-quarter mile, especially near coastal communities such as Utqiaġvik, Wainwright, Nuiqsut, Deadhorse, and Kaktovik.

The combination of high winds and loose snow is expected to create near-whiteout conditions at times, particularly along coastal travel corridors, ice roads, and the Dalton Highway, which serves as a critical route to Deadhorse.

Blizzard conditions may fluctuate in intensity but are expected to persist at times through Wednesday night. While snowfall amounts are not expected to be excessive, the blowing snow and extreme cold significantly increase travel risk.

These conditions may severely impact freight operations, oil field travel, subsistence activities, and local commuting, especially during overnight and early-morning hours.

Officials strongly advise limiting travel when possible, dressing in layers, and carrying emergency supplies. Residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
