Inyo County, California – Drivers heading into California’s Eastern Sierra could face slick roads and sudden visibility drops within hours as snow and gusty winds continue to affect high-elevation routes through Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Wednesday for the Eastern Sierra Slopes above 8,000 feet. Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are expected between 8,000 and 9,500 feet, with locally higher totals at elevations above 9,500 feet. Gusty winds will combine with falling snow to create blowing snow and rapidly changing travel conditions.
Impacts will be most noticeable near Whitney Portal and Aspendell, where mountain roads may become snow-covered and slippery, especially during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning travel periods. Strong wind gusts could also bring down tree branches, creating additional hazards along exposed roadways and parking areas.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel at higher elevations. Travelers should be prepared for brief road restrictions or delays as conditions deteriorate overnight. Updated road information is available by calling 1-800-427-7623.
Snow showers and gusty winds are expected to ease Wednesday afternoon, though lingering slick spots may persist into the evening. Additional advisories could be issued if conditions worsen at the highest elevations.
