Abilene, Texas – Increasing chances for rain and thunderstorms are expected across West Central Texas late this week, with the highest impacts forecast from Friday night into Saturday morning.
According to the US National Weather Service offices in Abilene and San Angelo, there is a medium to high probability — ranging from 70 to 90 percent — of showers and thunderstorms developing Friday and continuing into Saturday. The most widespread rainfall is expected overnight Friday into early Saturday, a timeframe that could affect both late-night and early-morning travel.
Forecast guidance indicates overall rainfall totals between one-quarter inch and one inch, with localized higher amounts possible under stronger storms. Communities including Abilene, San Angelo, Brownwood, Ballinger, and Sweetwater show elevated rain probabilities, particularly near major travel corridors such as Interstate 20, US Highway 67, US-84, and US-83.
While widespread severe weather is not expected at this time, the National Weather Service notes that a few storms could become strong to severe, producing brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and frequent lightning. Forecasters continue to monitor exact rainfall amounts and any potential severe weather threats as the system approaches.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly during heavier downpours, especially overnight when visibility is reduced. Drivers are urged to slow down on wet pavement and avoid driving through flooded low-water crossings, which can develop rapidly in parts of West Central Texas.
Rain chances gradually decrease later Saturday, with quieter conditions expected to return heading into the remainder of the weekend.
This forecast may be especially relevant for commuters, students, and young workers traveling overnight or early Saturday morning along major highways and rural roads.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official National Weather Service updates as forecast confidence and timing details continue to improve.
