Richmond, Virginia – Temperatures climbed into the 50s and lower 60s Tuesday, marking the region’s first above-normal day in more than two weeks, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield reported that Richmond reached the lower 50s by early afternoon, exceeding the normal high of 50 degrees for February 10. This represents the first above-average temperature day since January 23, following a prolonged stretch of colder-than-normal conditions across central and eastern Virginia.

Observed temperature departures show that much of late January and early February featured highs running 10 to more than 20 degrees below normal, including multiple days with departures exceeding minus 15 degrees. Tuesday’s warmer readings reflect a notable shift in the regional pattern.

Current temperature observations around 2 p.m. showed 60 degrees in Ahoskie, 61 in Farmville, 57 in Norfolk, 53 in Virginia Beach, and 51 in Richmond. Coastal and Eastern Shore locations remained cooler, with temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s near Ocean City Inlet, Wallops Island, and Assateague Island.

The warming trend improves travel and outdoor conditions along major corridors including Interstate 95 through Richmond and Petersburg, Interstate 64 across Hampton Roads, and Interstate 85 in south-central Virginia. Roads remain dry, and no winter precipitation impacts are expected.

Despite the moderation, forecasters caution that winter hazards persist. Ice remains unsafe on ponds, lakes, and rivers following the extended cold stretch, and residents are urged to stay off frozen bodies of water.

Temperatures are expected to remain seasonable to slightly above normal through midweek before additional weather systems approach later in the week.

Updated forecasts and temperature data are available from the National Weather Service Wakefield office.
