Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers across eastern Massachusetts and northern Connecticut could see rapidly deteriorating road conditions beginning with the evening commute as snow spreads into the region by early tonight, lingering through the Wednesday morning drive.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday for much of eastern and northeastern Massachusetts, including Boston, Cambridge, Framingham, Lawrence, Lowell, and Gloucester. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, enough to create snow-covered roads and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.

Similar snowfall totals are expected across Franklin and northern Worcester counties, impacting areas such as Greenfield, Fitchburg, Barre, and Orange. Farther southwest, mixed precipitation will affect Hartford County in Connecticut and western Hampden County in Massachusetts, where up to one inch of snow and a light glaze of ice could form on untreated surfaces.

Snow will intensify during the evening hours, making highways such as I-90, I-93, Route 128, and Route 2 slick through the overnight period. Bridges, ramps, and secondary roads are likely to ice over first, particularly in areas where snow mixes with freezing drizzle closer to the Connecticut border.

State transportation crews will be treating roadways, but motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. Conditions gradually improve after daybreak Wednesday, though slick spots may linger into the early commute as advisories remain in effect through 6 a.m.
