Allentown, Pennsylvania – Drivers across eastern Pennsylvania could run into slick roads within the next few hours as freezing rain develops by early evening, increasing the risk of crashes and falls through late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. until midnight for Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, and Monroe counties. A light glaze of ice is expected as rain freezes on contact with colder surfaces, especially on untreated roads, bridges, sidewalks, and driveways.
The highest impact window runs from the early evening commute through late tonight. Elevated roadways and overpasses are likely to become icy first in areas such as Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Reading, Stroudsburg, and Jim Thorpe. Even where pavement appears wet, conditions may quickly turn slick as temperatures hover near freezing.
PennDOT crews are expected to monitor and treat major routes, but motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Pedestrians should use caution on stairs and walkways, which may be coated with a nearly invisible layer of ice.
Conditions improve after midnight as temperatures rise slightly, though isolated slick spots could linger into the early overnight hours. Advisories remain in effect through tonight, and additional updates may be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
