Donegal, Pennsylvania – A light but impactful winter weather setup is expected to create slick and hazardous travel across the Laurel Highlands and nearby ridges early Wednesday, with freezing drizzle posing the biggest concern for drivers and pedestrians.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday for the higher elevations of Westmoreland, Fayette, and Indiana counties, along with Preston and Tucker counties in northern West Virginia. A light glaze of ice, up to a few hundredths of an inch, is expected on roads, bridges, sidewalks, and untreated surfaces.

According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office, freezing drizzle will develop before daybreak and persist into early afternoon. Even minimal ice can sharply reduce traction, especially on elevated roadways such as U.S. 711 near Donegal, PA Route 31 through the Laurel Summit area, and mountain roads near Ohiopyle and Champion.

The Wednesday morning commute is expected to be most affected. Bridges and overpasses may ice over quickly, even where pavement appears wet. PennDOT and WVDOH crews will monitor conditions, but motorists should plan for slower travel and allow extra braking distance.

Residents are urged to limit non-essential travel during the advisory window. Use caution on stairs, driveways, and sidewalks, where ice may be difficult to see. Wear footwear with good traction and secure handrails where possible. Charge mobile devices ahead of time and check 511 road conditions before traveling.
