Nevada – Strong south winds capable of producing hazardous travel conditions are expected across central Nevada beginning Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Elko said a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 1 p.m. PST Tuesday until 7 a.m. PST Wednesday for portions of White Pine, Southern Lander, Southern Eureka, Northeastern Nye, and Northwestern Nye Counties.
Forecasters said sustained south winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. The strongest winds are anticipated during the afternoon and evening hours, continuing overnight before gradually diminishing Wednesday morning.
Impacts from the high winds may include blown-down tree limbs, isolated power outages, and blowing dust, which could reduce visibility to one mile or less in exposed areas. Loose and unsecured outdoor objects may also be displaced.
Locations affected by the advisory include Ely, Eureka, Tonopah, Round Mountain, Lund, McGill, Duckwater, Manhattan, Diamond Valley, Ruth, and Cherry Creek, along with higher-elevation passes such as Hickison Summit, Pinto Summit, and Garden Pass.
The National Weather Service cautioned that driving may become difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semis, RVs, and trailers. Motorists traveling along open highways and mountain passes are urged to use extra caution and remain alert for sudden crosswinds and areas of blowing dust.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items and prepare for potential brief power disruptions as the wind event moves through the region.
Additional updates will be issued by the National Weather Service if conditions change.
