Blacksburg, VA – Temperatures are surging across southwest and central Virginia today, bringing a brief but significant warmup that will accelerate snow and ice melt before colder air returns midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, daytime high temperatures today will rise into the 50s and 60s across nearly the entire region, marking a sharp departure from recent colder conditions. The warmest readings are expected along major travel corridors including Interstate 81, US-460, US-221, and US-11, impacting communities from Blacksburg and Christiansburg to Wytheville, Roanoke, and surrounding areas.

Forecasters note that this abnormal warmth will kickstart rapid snowmelt, especially in areas where snowpack has lingered over the past week. Increased runoff may lead to ponding of water on roadways, saturated ground, and localized drainage issues, particularly during the afternoon hours when melting peaks.

Despite the warm daytime conditions, the National Weather Service emphasizes that this warmup will be short-lived. Temperatures are expected to cool quickly beginning Wednesday, with overnight lows dropping back into the 20s by Wednesday night. Any remaining moisture from melting snow may refreeze, creating slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces along I-81 and secondary mountain routes.

No significant rainfall or flooding is anticipated at this time, but drivers are advised to remain alert for changing road conditions, especially during early morning and nighttime travel periods later this week.

Residents, commuters, and students should take advantage of improved conditions today while preparing for a return to winterlike temperatures. Forecast updates will continue as colder air moves back into the region.
