Albany, New York – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across eastern New York and adjacent New England as snow and light icing are expected to impact travel through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the advisory covers portions of the Mohawk Valley, Capital Region, eastern Catskills, Mid-Hudson Valley, southern Vermont, western Massachusetts, and northwestern Connecticut. The alert is in effect today through late tonight or Wednesday, depending on location.
Snowfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 3 inches in lower elevations, including Albany, Pittsfield, Springfield, and Poughkeepsie, with 3 to 6 inches across higher terrain. Parts of the western Adirondacks and northern Mohawk Valley, including areas near Old Forge and Watertown, could see 6 to 8 inches of snow.
In addition to snow, light icing is possible. Forecast probabilities show a 30% to 60% chance of at least 0.01 inches of ice across the Catskills, Mid-Hudson Valley, northeastern Pennsylvania, and northwestern Connecticut. Ice accumulations are generally expected to remain light, with most areas seeing 0.01 to 0.05 inches, but even minor glazing could create hazardous travel conditions.
Roadways including Interstates 87, 88, 90, and 84, along with secondary highways, may become slick, especially during periods of freezing rain or during the Wednesday morning commute.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to allow extra time, reduce speeds, and use caution on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Minor power outages are not expected, but isolated issues cannot be ruled out in areas experiencing light ice accretion.
Commuters and students should monitor local forecasts and be prepared for changing conditions as temperatures fluctuate near freezing through midweek.
