Michigan — Snowflakes drift through misty air along Lake Superior this morning. In Marquette, light snow and fog reduce visibility, while temperatures sit near 27 degrees. Pavement looks wet, but ice hides in plain sight.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early morning. Mixed precipitation has already left a thin glaze in spots, especially on untreated roads. Drivers heading out early should expect slippery conditions on US-41, M-28, and neighborhood streets. Slow down and allow extra braking distance.
Snow continues at times today, mainly before mid-morning. Additional accumulation stays light, generally under an inch. Even so, gusty northwest winds develop later today, blowing snow across open stretches and briefly lowering visibility. Conditions may deteriorate quickly near the lakeshore.
By afternoon, snow tapers off. Clouds linger, and highs struggle to reach the low 30s. Cold air keeps road surfaces icy, especially where traffic packs snow down. Crews will improve conditions, but slick spots persist through the day.
Colder air settles in tonight. Temperatures drop into the teens, locking in any remaining moisture. This sets up classic flash-freeze conditions, where daytime melting refreezes after sunset.
Wednesday brings some improvement. Skies turn partly sunny, but highs only reach the mid-20s. Winds remain brisk, keeping wind chills in the teens. Winter stays firmly in control through Thursday, with highs near 30 and cold nights.
By Friday, change arrives. Sunshine helps temperatures climb toward the upper 30s. Valentine’s Day weekend trends quieter and slightly milder, offering a break from active winter weather.
Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across Upper Michigan. Even with heavy ice on the Great Lakes, a broader thaw may develop late next week.
For now, winter rules the roads. How are conditions where you’re traveling this morning?
