Texas – Dry grass rattles in the wind this morning across the Panhandles as sunshine breaks through thin clouds. The air feels mild, but it carries a sharp edge. Conditions are lining up quickly for elevated fire danger before warmer air settles in.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, breezy west winds and low humidity will combine this morning and afternoon across the eastern Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Gusts reach near 30 mph at times, allowing fires to spread quickly if sparked. Spotter activation is not expected, but outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Temperatures climb into the mid-50s today, then dip tonight as winds ease. Clearer skies arrive Wednesday, pushing highs into the mid-60s. That warming trend accelerates late week. By Thursday afternoon, Amarillo reaches the mid-70s, delivering a sharp February spring tease just ahead of Valentine’s Day weekend.

Moisture begins to return Friday. Clouds increase, and showers become likely by afternoon and evening. Rain chances rise toward 70 percent, which may briefly slow travel along I-40 and Loop 335. Wet pavement could turn slick after sunset as temperatures fall.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across much of the southern Plains into early next week. That supports a mild stretch from Monday through Saturday, even as passing fronts bring changing winds. While winter is not finished, the pattern leans warmer for now.

Avoid activities that could spark fires today. Secure loose items in strong winds. Traveling later this week? Plan for rain impacts Friday.
