Vermont – Snow clouds thicken quickly, and the air feels sharper by the hour. Flakes begin to stack on rooftops and windshields, signaling a messy commute as winter reasserts control across northern Vermont.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midafternoon through early Wednesday. Snow becomes steady later today, with totals between 3 and 6 inches expected in the northern Champlain Valley and the central to northern Green Mountains. Snowfall rates may reach 1 inch per hour during the evening commute.
In Burlington, South Burlington, Winooski, and along I-89, travel conditions are expected to deteriorate fast after midafternoon. Roads turn snow-covered quickly, especially bridges and overpasses. Visibility drops during heavier bursts, and untreated side streets become slick. Motorists should plan extra time and reduce speed through the evening hours.
Snow continues into the night before tapering toward daybreak Wednesday. Temperatures remain cold, holding near the teens, which limits melting and allows snow to compact into icy layers. Crews will be active, but road conditions may stay hazardous into the early commute.
Wednesday stays mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers and highs near 29. Cold air deepens Wednesday night, dropping temperatures into the mid-teens. Thursday brings quieter weather, but highs stay near the mid-20s, keeping packed snow slow to improve.
By Friday and into Valentine’s Day weekend, sunshine returns and temperatures gradually rebound toward the upper 20s. Looking further ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook points to above-normal temperatures late next week. With Lake Champlain largely frozen, that thaw could mean daytime melting followed by nighttime refreezing.
Slow down this evening, allow extra stopping distance, and watch for changing road conditions. How much snow are you seeing in your neighborhood?
