New York City, NY – Light snow and rain are expected to affect travel across the region Tuesday evening as a fast-moving cold front passes through.

According to the National Weather Service office in New York, very light and spotty precipitation is expected to develop late Tuesday afternoon and continue into Tuesday evening. Forecasters say precipitation should begin as light snow across parts of the Hudson Valley and areas north and west of New York City before changing to rain as temperatures slowly rise.

In New York City and across Long Island, precipitation is expected to fall mainly as rain Tuesday night. However, the National Weather Service cautions that patchy light freezing rain or sleet could briefly mix in north and west of the city, including areas near Interstate 87 and portions of northern New Jersey. Along parts of Long Island’s North Shore, a brief wintry mix cannot be ruled out before a full transition to rain.

High temperatures Tuesday are forecast to remain below normal, generally reaching the mid-30s across the metro area. Winds are expected to remain light, from the south around 5 mph, limiting blowing snow but allowing untreated roads and bridges to cool quickly after sunset.

Motorists traveling during the late afternoon and evening commute, particularly along I-95, I-87, and I-495, should remain alert for brief slick spots, especially on elevated roadways, ramps, and bridges north and west of the city.

The system is expected to move through quickly, with no significant accumulation anticipated. Conditions should improve later Tuesday night as precipitation tapers off.

This type of light but mixed precipitation can still impact commuters, students, and evening workers during peak travel hours.
