Jackson, Wyoming – Travel across northwest Wyoming’s mountain corridors could grind to a halt starting Tuesday evening as heavy snow rapidly piles up across the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains, putting Teton Pass at high risk for closures during peak commute hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Wednesday. Snow totals of 6 to 12 inches are expected across the Teton Mountains, including Teton Pass, with the highest elevations seeing up to 15 inches. Portions of the Gros Ventre Mountains will also see significant accumulation, while Togwotee Pass is forecast to receive 4 to 5 inches.
Snow intensifies overnight, but the most disruptive window arrives Wednesday morning. From 5 a.m. through late afternoon, snowfall rates could reach 0.5 to 1 inch per hour, rapidly reducing visibility and covering road surfaces faster than crews can clear them. WYDOT warns that conditions over Teton Pass could deteriorate quickly, especially during the Wednesday morning commute.
Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel, check wyoroad.info for real-time road conditions, and carry winter emergency supplies. Even well-treated routes may become snow-packed during heavier bursts.
Snow tapers late Wednesday afternoon, but lingering slick spots and blowing snow may persist into the evening. Additional advisories or travel restrictions remain possible if snowfall rates exceed expectations.
