Watertown, New York – Drivers across the eastern Lake Ontario region could face worsening road conditions starting late Tuesday morning as steady snow spreads into Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, creating hazardous travel through midweek. Snowfall rates increase by the evening commute, with visibility dropping and untreated roads turning slick, especially across higher terrain.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Thursday. Snow totals of 6 to 11 inches are expected across the Tug Hill Plateau, while lower elevations including Watertown and Oswego should see 3 to 6 inches by the time the system tapers off.

The most significant impacts are expected Tuesday evening and again Wednesday morning, when snow-covered roads and limited visibility could slow travel on I-81, Route 177, and Route 104. Lewis County’s higher elevations are likely to see the greatest accumulation, increasing the risk for spin-outs on rural and secondary roads.

Local highway departments are preparing for repeated plow cycles, but drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall periods. Charging devices and keeping emergency kits in vehicles is recommended.

Snow gradually eases late Wednesday night, but slick spots may linger into early Thursday. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase or lake-enhanced bands persist.
