Raleigh, North Carolina – Widespread rainfall late Saturday into Sunday could impact travel and drainage across central North Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service Raleigh and the Weather Prediction Center, a developing late-winter storm system is expected to bring increasing rain chances beginning Saturday evening, with the most likely window for steady rainfall occurring overnight Saturday through Sunday. Forecast confidence is highest in the timing, while rainfall totals and thunderstorm potential remain less certain.
Current projections show 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain possible across much of central North Carolina, including areas along Interstate 40, Interstate 85, and Interstate 95. The heaviest totals are favored near and south of the Triangle, including Fayetteville and surrounding Sandhills communities. Locally higher amounts could occur if thunderstorms develop.
The Weather Prediction Center indicates a 30 to 50 percent probability of exceeding one inch of rainfall across the region. While widespread flooding is not currently forecast, saturated ground conditions and poor drainage areas could see brief water accumulation, particularly during heavier downpours late Saturday night.
This rainfall could provide some short-term relief for ongoing drought conditions across North Carolina. However, state drought officials note that frozen ground, runoff, and rainfall intensity will determine how much water ultimately benefits soil moisture, streams, and reservoirs.
Ahead of the weekend system, temperatures are expected to trend well above normal by Tuesday, followed by a mostly dry cold front Wednesday. No organized severe weather risk is indicated at this time, though predictability remains limited several days out.
Commuters, students, and weekend travelers should monitor updated forecasts, especially if traveling overnight or early Sunday when rain coverage is expected to peak.
Residents are encouraged to stay aware of forecast updates as timing and rainfall totals become clearer later this week.
