Morehead City, North Carolina – A warming trend is beginning across eastern North Carolina today, signaling a gradual break from recent cold conditions ahead of significantly milder weather expected Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, Monday afternoon high temperatures will range from the upper 30s to mid-40s, remaining 15 to 20 degrees below normal despite the warming trend. Coastal and Inner Banks communities, including Morehead City, New Bern, Jacksonville, and Greenville, will see cooler-than-average readings, though daytime conditions will steadily improve.

The NWS notes that the more impactful change arrives Tuesday, when high temperatures are expected to climb into the 60s across much of eastern North Carolina. This marks a sharp turnaround from recent winter cold and will be noticeable along major travel corridors such as U.S. Highway 70, U.S. Highway 17, Interstate 95, and NC Highway 12.

Overnight lows tonight will remain cold, with temperatures dropping into the low to mid-30s, particularly inland. Drivers traveling early Tuesday morning should remain alert for cold pavement temperatures, especially on bridges and elevated roadways, before daytime warming takes hold.

Monday’s weather will be dry, allowing for stable travel conditions throughout the day. Forecasters expect no significant precipitation during the warming transition, helping roads remain clear across coastal plains and Outer Banks communities.

The warming trend may be especially relevant for commuters, students, port workers, and military personnel, as improved afternoon temperatures reduce cold exposure and ease daily travel.

Despite the upcoming warmth, officials remind residents that seasonal variability remains likely, and temperatures may fluctuate later in the week. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as the pattern continues to evolve.

For now, eastern North Carolina can expect a clear shift toward milder weather beginning today and strengthening Tuesday.
