Wichita, Kansas – Very high grassland fire danger is expected across central and south-central Kansas this afternoon as unseasonably warm temperatures combine with strong, gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, temperatures today are forecast to run 25 to 30 degrees above average, with highs reaching the mid-70s to near 80 degrees across much of the region. Southwest winds will remain breezy throughout the afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.

The highest fire danger is expected between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., particularly in areas west and south of Wichita, including Hutchinson, Pratt, Harper, Kingman, and rural portions of Reno, Sedgwick, and Sumner counties. Elevated to very high fire danger conditions are highlighted near major travel corridors such as Interstate 135, U.S. Highway 54, U.S. 400, and K-61, where vehicle-related sparks or roadside ignitions are more likely.

The NWS warns that dry grasses and dormant vegetation can ignite easily under these conditions. Any fires that start may spread quickly and become difficult to control. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure trailer chains to prevent sparks along roadways.

Winds are expected to remain breezy into the evening before diminishing overnight. Temperatures tonight will fall into the upper 30s to mid-40s, helping reduce fire risk. A modest cooldown is forecast by Tuesday, followed by increasing chances for rain later in the week, which may help ease dry conditions.

The fire danger may be especially relevant for commuters, farmers, ranchers, and highway travelers during peak afternoon hours.

Officials encourage residents to remain alert and report any fires immediately.
