Virginia wakes under a hard February freeze, with stiff winds slicing across coastal neighborhoods and inland highways. The air feels raw before sunrise, and exposed skin stings within minutes.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., covering southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina. Wind chills drop as low as 4 degrees above zero, especially near the coast and open areas. In Virginia Beach, temperatures sit in the lower 20s, but gusty north winds make it feel far colder.

Morning travel stays dry, yet conditions feel unforgiving. Wind funnels across bridges and tunnels, including I-64, I-264, and Route 13, where cold exposure becomes the primary concern. Pedestrians, dock workers, and early commuters should limit time outdoors and dress in layers. Pets also need protection from the cold ground and wind.

Sunshine returns quickly after sunrise, helping temperatures rebound. Even so, highs only reach the mid-30s today, keeping winter firmly in control. Cold lingers into tonight, though winds gradually relax.

By Tuesday, a noticeable shift begins. Sunshine dominates again, and highs climb into the lower 50s, offering the first real relief from the cold snap. Winds turn southerly, signaling a pattern change.

Midweek brings clouds and a slight chance of rain Wednesday, with highs near 49 degrees. While no winter precipitation is expected locally, any early-morning chill followed by daytime warming raises flash-freeze concerns in shaded areas.

Looking toward the 6–10 day outlook, temperatures trend above normal. A broader thaw develops across the eastern U.S., even as the Great Lakes remain largely frozen. Late-week rain chances increase, but signs of spring slowly emerge.

Five-Day Outlook (Virginia Beach / Tidewater)

  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 53°F
  • Wednesday: Slight rain chance, high 49°F
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 40°F
