New York feels locked in ice as sharp winds slice through streets and parks.
Breath turns visible instantly, and exposed skin stings within minutes this morning.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wind chill values have dropped as low as 10 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions across New York City and nearby areas.

Actual air temperatures hover near 10°F, while northwest winds amplify the cold. Train platforms feel unforgiving. Sidewalks sound brittle underfoot. Even short walks feel taxing without layered protection.

Officials warn that hypothermia can develop quickly if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, cover exposed skin, and check on older neighbors. Pets should remain indoors. Space heaters must be used carefully, and generators or grills should never be used inside.

Conditions improve gradually later today. Sunshine dominates, and temperatures climb toward 30°F by afternoon. Winds ease slightly, helping reduce the cold stress. For now, the morning hours remain the most dangerous.

Attention then turns to midweek winter weather. By Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday, increasing clouds bring a chance of light snow or a rain-snow mix. Even minimal snowfall could create slushy patches and flash-freezing risks once temperatures dip after sunset.

Drivers should stay alert on untreated roads, bridges, and shaded streets. Late winter sun can melt snow during the day, only for moisture to refreeze quickly.

Looking ahead, a gradual February thaw takes shape. From Thursday through Saturday, highs settle into the mid to upper 30s. Early signals into the 6–10 day outlook suggest above-normal temperatures next week, hinting at a slow transition toward milder weather.

Five-Day Outlook for New York City:

  • Today: Sunny, high near 30°F
  • Tuesday: Slight snow chance after afternoon, high near 37°F
  • Wednesday: Partly sunny, high near 39°F
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high near 35°F
  • Friday: Sunny, high near 35°F
