New York Coastal Waters – Heavy freezing spray continues to threaten vessels across Long Island Sound, creating hazardous marine conditions through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service office in New York, a Heavy Freezing Spray Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. EST Sunday for all Long Island Sound marine zones. Freezing spray rates may reach 2 centimeters per hour or greater, allowing ice to rapidly accumulate on decks, railings, and superstructures.

Northwest winds of 20 to 25 knots, with gusts up to 30 knots, are expected through the day. Seas will range from 3 to 5 feet, contributing to dangerous conditions for smaller vessels. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. EST, even after the freezing spray warning expires.

A Gale Warning that was previously in effect expired at 6 a.m. EST, but hazardous conditions persist due to continued cold air and strong winds moving across the relatively warmer waters of the Sound.

The National Weather Service warns that heavy freezing spray can disable mechanical and electronic systems and cause rapid ice accretion that may lead to a catastrophic loss of vessel stability. Conditions are considered especially dangerous for smaller or less experienced operators.

Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port if possible, avoid affected waters, or take active measures to mitigate ice buildup. Inexperienced mariners, particularly those operating small craft, are urged not to navigate during the warning period.

The alert applies to all sections of Long Island Sound, including waters east and west of New Haven, Connecticut, and Port Jefferson, New York.
