Sacramento, California – Heavy mountain snowfall is expected across portions of the Northern Sierra Nevada beginning late Monday night, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect through Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

The National Weather Service said the advisory will be in effect from 10 p.m. Monday to 4 p.m. PST Wednesday for the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada and Western Plumas County, including areas near Lassen Volcanic National Park. The advisory applies to elevations above 5,000 feet.

Forecast snowfall totals range from 4 to 10 inches above 5,000 feet, with heavier accumulations of 10 to 18 inches expected above 6,000 feet. Locally higher totals are possible over the highest peaks. The heaviest snowfall is expected Tuesday into Tuesday evening.

Affected communities include Quincy, Chester, and Blue Canyon, along with surrounding mountain areas. According to the weather service, travel through higher elevations could become very difficult during periods of heavier snowfall.

Mountain roadways are expected to be impacted, including Interstate 80 over Donner Pass, State Route 70 through the Feather River Canyon, and State Route 36 near Lassen Park. Drivers should be prepared for snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing conditions.

The National Weather Service warned that travel delays and chain controls are likely, especially during the Tuesday morning and evening travel periods. Even moderate snowfall rates could quickly lead to hazardous driving conditions as snow accumulates on cold road surfaces.

Motorists are urged to check the latest road conditions before traveling by visiting Caltrans QuickMap or dialing 511. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and carry chains when traveling in the Sierra.

While lower elevations may see rain or minimal impacts, conditions in the mountains are expected to remain hazardous through Wednesday afternoon as snowfall gradually tapers off.
