Massachusetts – The air bites hard along city streets this morning, turning every breath sharp and visible. Sidewalks creak under frozen boots as the Arctic cold tightens its hold across southern New England.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Wind chills have plunged as low as 17 degrees below zero across eastern and southeastern Massachusetts and much of Rhode Island. Exposure can quickly lead to frostbite or hypothermia without proper layers.

Early travel comes with added risk. Gusty northwest winds combine with extreme cold to refreeze damp pavement on I-95, I-93, Route 6, and local bridges around Providence and Boston. Shaded sidewalks and untreated side roads remain slick, even where skies are clear.

Actual temperatures stay in the single digits early, with highs struggling to reach the upper teens today. Winds ease slightly later, but the cold remains stubborn into the afternoon. Tonight turns calmer and clear, allowing temperatures to fall back into the single digits once again.

Relief begins Monday. Sunshine dominates as highs climb toward the upper 20s, easing the harsh wind chill. Tuesday brings the next weather focus. Clouds increase and a weak system may bring a light snow chance late in the day or evening. Accumulations appear minor, but even a dusting could trigger flash freezing after sunset.

Midweek continues the transition. Wednesday turns brighter with highs near the upper 30s, followed by seasonably cool nights. By late week, temperatures trend closer to normal, hinting at a broader February thaw spreading across the Northeast.

For now, limit time outdoors, wear hats and gloves, and keep pets inside. Morning commuters should allow extra time. How cold did it feel in your neighborhood today?
