Virginia – Flags snap hard in the wind as frigid air surges off the Atlantic, cutting through coats and numbing hands within minutes. The cold is immediate and unforgiving early this morning across southeast Virginia, with conditions turning dangerous for anyone caught outside too long.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wind chills have dropped as low as two degrees below zero across coastal Virginia and nearby northeast North Carolina. Gusty northwest winds, reaching 30 to 35 mph at times, are amplifying the cold and increasing the risk of hypothermia without proper protection.

Travel concerns build quickly despite dry pavement. Strong crosswinds along I-264, I-64, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel can push vehicles unexpectedly, especially high-profile trucks. Any lingering moisture on bridges and shaded ramps may flash-freeze, creating brief slick spots during the morning commute.

Conditions slowly improve later today as winds ease. Highs struggle to reach the upper 20s, but the worst wind chills fade by late morning. Tonight remains cold, with lows near 20, before a clear warming trend begins.

Monday brings calmer weather and sunshine, pushing highs into the mid-30s. By Tuesday, a noticeable shift arrives as southwest winds pull milder air north. Temperatures climb into the low 50s, delivering a dramatic February thaw after the Arctic blast.

Midweek turns more unsettled. Clouds increase Tuesday night, and rain chances arrive Wednesday as highs approach the upper 40s. Wet roads could slow travel, though no wintry precipitation is expected along the coast.

Looking ahead, late-week temperatures trend above normal, hinting that winter loosens its grip despite lingering cold mornings. Until then, layer up, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors this morning.
