Boston, Massachusetts — Bitterly cold conditions will continue across eastern Massachusetts today and into Monday, keeping temperatures well below seasonal averages before a gradual improvement begins Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, Sunday highs will range from 8 to 23 degrees, with overnight lows dropping between 5 and 15 degrees below zero in colder inland locations. Gusty northwest winds of up to 25 mph will produce dangerously low wind chills, particularly during the morning and evening hours.
Cold conditions persist into Monday, with highs expected between 20 and 28 degrees. Skies will be mostly sunny, but breezy conditions will keep it feeling colder, especially away from the immediate coastline. Slightly milder air will begin to move in by Tuesday, when highs climb into the upper 20s to mid-30s, along with increasing cloud cover and a low chance for afternoon snow showers.
Travel impacts are primarily related to cold exposure rather than precipitation. Major corridors including Interstate 93 through Boston, Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), Route 128/I-95, and Route 3 on the South Shore are expected to remain dry. However, cold pavement temperatures may allow for icy patches to linger in shaded areas, particularly during early-morning hours.
Forecasters note that another system may approach midweek, bringing the potential for snow showers across southern New England and possibly some rain closer to the south coast. Confidence in timing and impacts remains low at this stage.
The extended cold is especially relevant for commuters, students, outdoor workers, and unhoused populations, as prolonged exposure increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers should carry cold-weather emergency supplies when traveling until temperatures moderate later this week.
