Atlanta, Georgia – Dry air and gusty winds are creating dangerous fire weather conditions across north Georgia today.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Fire Danger Statement remains in effect through 7 p.m. Saturday for much of north Georgia and portions of central Georgia. The alert highlights a combination of very low humidity, strong northwest winds, and dry vegetation that could allow fires to spread rapidly.
Forecasters report relative humidity levels dropping to 25 percent or lower this afternoon. Sustained northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph across lower elevations. In higher terrain, especially near the north Georgia mountains, wind gusts may exceed 40 mph.
These conditions are especially concerning near major transportation corridors, including Interstate 75, Interstate 85, and Interstate 20, where roadside sparks or discarded smoking materials could ignite dry grasses. Areas near US-27, US-78, and GA-365 are also included in the elevated fire risk zone.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning of any kind during the alert period. Even small, controlled fires could quickly escape containment under today’s conditions, posing risks to nearby homes, wooded areas, and roadways. Smoke from fast-moving grass or brush fires could also reduce visibility for drivers during the afternoon and early evening commute.
The fire danger statement is expected to expire this evening as winds gradually weaken and humidity levels recover after sunset. However, officials note that dry vegetation will remain, meaning fire safety remains important in the days ahead.
Residents, outdoor workers, and commuters—particularly students and young workers traveling along major highways—are urged to remain cautious, properly dispose of smoking materials, and avoid activities that could spark a fire.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates if additional fire weather alerts become necessary.
