Denver, Colorado – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across northeast Colorado this afternoon under an active Red Flag Warning.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, gusty winds combined with very low humidity and dry fuels will create conditions favorable for rapid fire spread from noon through 5 p.m. Saturday. The warning covers portions of eastern Larimer, Weld, Morgan, Logan, Washington, Sedgwick, and Phillips counties.

West winds are expected to gust up to 40 miles per hour, while relative humidity levels may drop as low as 13 percent. These factors significantly increase the risk that any spark could quickly ignite dry vegetation and spread out of control.

Communities along major transportation corridors, including Interstate 25, Interstate 76, U.S. Highway 85, and surrounding rural roadways, may be especially vulnerable due to roadside ignition sources and open grassland exposure. Officials urge drivers to avoid pulling over on dry grass and to ensure chains or vehicle components are not dragging.

The National Weather Service advises residents to follow all local burn restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that could create sparks. This includes welding, agricultural burning, and improper disposal of cigarettes. Even brief ignition sources may be enough to start a fast-moving grass fire under today’s conditions.

Fire weather warnings are issued when weather and fuel conditions align to support extreme fire behavior. While no specific fires were reported in the alert, officials stress that preparedness and prevention are critical during these windows.

For commuters, agricultural workers, and outdoor crews, the afternoon hours pose the highest risk period before conditions improve later in the evening as winds ease.

Residents are encouraged to stay alert for additional updates from local fire agencies and weather officials throughout the day, especially if conditions change rapidly across the northeast plains.
