Raleigh, North Carolina – Strong winds today followed by dangerous cold tonight are creating hazardous conditions across central and eastern North Carolina.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. today as gusty conditions continue across much of the region. Winds may blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause scattered power outages. Driving may be difficult at times, especially for high-profile vehicles traveling along major routes such as Interstate 40, I-440, I-540, U.S. Highway 64, and I-95.
Behind the winds, a Cold Weather Advisory will take effect from 11 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Sunday for portions of the Sandhills and Coastal Plain. Wind chill values between 5 and 10 degrees are expected in advisory areas, with similar chills possible across the northern Piedmont even where formal advisories are not in place.
The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to cold wind chills can lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter from the wind and cold.
Winds will gradually diminish overnight, but cold conditions will persist into Sunday morning. Sunday will be dry and sunny, though temperatures will remain on the chilly side early before slowly moderating later in the day.
The combination of gusty winds today and cold conditions tonight may particularly impact commuters, outdoor workers, and travelers during the evening and early-morning hours.
Officials recommend securing loose outdoor items, using extra caution while driving in windy conditions, and staying informed through official National Weather Service updates as advisories remain in effect.
