CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina is expected to experience a brief moderation in temperatures around Valentine’s Day, though the potential for rain and occasional wintry precipitation will linger across the state from Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.

Highs on Valentine’s Day are forecast to reach the mid-40s across much of central North Carolina, including Charlotte, while nighttime lows dip into the upper 20s and lower 30s. These marginal temperatures may allow for a mix of rain and snow during overnight and early morning hours, particularly during passing weather disturbances.

Forecast guidance suggests a series of weak systems will move through the region during the period, bringing intermittent precipitation rather than prolonged or heavy events. The North Carolina mountains are most likely to see snow or a rain-snow mix, while the Piedmont and coastal plain are expected to experience mainly rain, especially during daylight hours.

Although significant snow accumulation is not anticipated at this time, light accumulations in higher elevations and colder valleys could create slick travel conditions. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles may also lead to patchy ice on bridges and secondary roads, especially in western and northern sections of the state.

Temperatures are expected to fluctuate near seasonal norms, with no sustained warm-up through the extended forecast period. Residents planning travel or outdoor activities around Valentine’s Day weekend should remain attentive to forecast updates, as small shifts in temperature could affect precipitation type and road conditions between Feb. 14 and Feb. 20.
