NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey is expected to see a modest temperature rebound heading into Valentine’s Day weekend, though lingering chances for rain and snow may keep conditions unsettled from Feb. 14 through Feb. 20.

High temperatures on Valentine’s Day are forecast to reach the low to mid-30s across much of the state, including the Newark metro area. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the 20s, creating conditions favorable for mixed precipitation during passing weather systems.

Rather than a single major storm, forecasters are monitoring several weak disturbances expected to move through the region during the period. These systems could bring light snow, rain, or a wintry mix, particularly during overnight and early morning hours when temperatures hover near freezing.

Northwestern New Jersey, including higher elevations near Sussex and Warren counties, is more likely to experience snow or brief accumulations. Central and southern portions of the state may see a greater tendency for rain or mixed precipitation, though quick transitions between precipitation types remain possible.

Even light precipitation could lead to slick travel conditions, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. The combination of near-freezing temperatures and repeated freeze-thaw cycles may increase the risk of icy spots during nighttime and early morning hours.

While temperatures are expected to trend closer to seasonal averages, no prolonged warm spell is anticipated. Winter conditions are expected to persist through late February, marked by fluctuating temperatures and periodic precipitation chances.

Residents with travel plans or outdoor activities scheduled around Valentine’s Day weekend are advised to stay alert for forecast updates, as minor temperature changes could significantly affect precipitation type and travel conditions across New Jersey from Feb. 14–20.
