Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia – Sub-freezing temperatures early Sunday are prompting a Freeze Warning across a wide multi-county region, raising concerns for vegetation, pets, and vulnerable residents.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. EST Sunday, with overnight low temperatures expected to fall to around 29 degrees. Frost development is also likely as temperatures dip below freezing during the pre-dawn hours.
The warning covers large portions of northeast and northern Florida and southeast Georgia, including inland areas of Baker, Nassau, Hamilton, Columbia, and Duval counties in Florida, along with numerous counties across southern Georgia. Communities from Macclenny and White Springs to Waycross, Douglas, Baxley, and Folkston are included.
While the alert is not tied to winter precipitation, cold conditions may impact early-morning travel along major corridors such as Interstate 95, Interstate 10, U.S. Highway 301, and rural two-lane roadways, particularly in low-lying inland areas where temperatures fall fastest near sunrise.
The National Weather Service warns that tender vegetation may be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Outdoor pets should be brought indoors or provided with adequate warmth, and residents are urged to check on young children, the elderly, and unhoused individuals, who are especially vulnerable during cold snaps.
Commuters, agricultural workers, and students with early Sunday schedules may notice frost on windshields and cold-start vehicle issues during the warning period.
Residents are advised to take precautions Saturday night, including covering plants, insulating exposed pipes, and limiting prolonged outdoor exposure until temperatures rise later Sunday morning.
