Indianapolis, Indiana – A sharp drop in temperatures tonight is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across central Indiana as wet roads refreeze, leading to the risk of widespread black ice.

According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, temperatures will fall back below freezing this evening after daytime readings climbed into the 30s. As a result, wet pavement is likely to refreeze, producing slick and often invisible ice on roadways, bridges, and overpasses.

Forecasters warn that patchy black ice may develop quickly, especially along major travel corridors such as Interstate 65, Interstate 70, Interstate 69, Interstate 74, and U.S. Route 31. The risk will be highest overnight and into the early Saturday morning hours, when traffic volumes are lower and road treatment may be limited.

In addition to icy roads, much colder air will settle into the region overnight. Low temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits for many locations, with wind chills by dawn ranging from -10 degrees to 10 degrees above zero. These conditions may pose a risk to anyone outdoors without adequate protection.

Saturday and Sunday will remain cold, with afternoon highs only in the 20s to near 30 degrees. While conditions will be dry, cold pavement temperatures will allow icy spots to persist in shaded areas and on less-traveled roads.

The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Drivers should be especially cautious during overnight travel and early morning commutes, when black ice is hardest to detect.

Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, protect pets, and check on vulnerable neighbors as the cold persists through the weekend. Improvement is expected beginning Monday, when temperatures are forecast to moderate.

Travelers should monitor updated forecasts and road conditions at weather.gov/ind, as well as local traffic advisories, before heading out tonight and early Saturday.
