New York, New York – A light snowfall moving through the region tonight into Saturday morning may create slick travel conditions across parts of the New York City metro area, Long Island, and southern Connecticut.
According to the National Weather Service New York, a period of light snow will overspread the area this evening as colder air moves in on gusty winds. Total snowfall amounts of 0.5 to 2 inches are expected, with the highest accumulations across eastern Long Island and southeastern Connecticut.
Forecasters note that while snowfall amounts are modest, road conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially overnight. Snowfall combined with falling temperatures may cause roads to become slick, even if they initially appear wet. The greatest travel impacts are expected along major corridors including Interstate 95, Interstate 295, the Cross Bronx Expressway, the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway, and Route 15 in Connecticut.
Snow is expected to taper off by Saturday morning, but lingering slick spots may remain on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Cold air moving in behind the system will help keep surfaces icy in shaded or less-traveled areas.
The National Weather Service emphasized that visibility reductions are possible at times, particularly during heavier snow bursts, and conditions can vary significantly over short distances. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time.
The snow accompanies strengthening winds ushering in colder conditions for the weekend. While no major storm impacts are anticipated, the timing of the snow during overnight hours increases the risk for early-morning travel disruptions.
Commuters, overnight workers, and early Saturday travelers should remain weather-aware and check road conditions before heading out. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and steps.
