Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A powerful arctic front moving through the Mid-Atlantic will bring dangerous cold, damaging winds, and hazardous conditions from late tonight through Sunday, prompting widespread warnings across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly, light snow will move into the area this evening with minor accumulations generally under 1 inch. While snowfall impacts are limited, conditions will worsen rapidly overnight as strong northwest winds develop behind the front.

Wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph are expected from early Saturday morning through Saturday evening, especially along major corridors including Interstate 95, Interstate 295, Interstate 76, Interstate 78, and the New Jersey Turnpike. These winds may lead to downed trees, scattered power outages, and difficult travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

The primary threat will be the cold. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for the entire region as wind chills plunge to -10° to -20°, with localized values near -30° possible in the Poconos and higher elevations from Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Wind chills are expected to remain below zero throughout much of Saturday.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur in as little as 15 to 30 minutes under these conditions. The combination of power outages and extreme cold could significantly increase the danger to vulnerable populations.

Marine interests will also be impacted, with gale to storm-force winds and moderate to heavy freezing spray expected over coastal waters.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for possible power disruptions. Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind periods and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

Conditions will gradually improve late Sunday as winds diminish, though cold temperatures will persist.

The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring updates at weather.gov/phi, as additional advisories or warnings may be issued.
