Clendenin, West Virginia — Detectives are again seeking public help to identify skeletal remains discovered along the Elk River more than a decade ago.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, skeletal remains were found Aug. 31, 2014, under a bridge and along a riverbank off Reamer Road in Clendenin. The remains were sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., for forensic anthropological analysis.

The Smithsonian concluded the remains belong to a Caucasian male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and estimated to be between 45 and 55 years old at the time of death. Forensic findings indicated a history of physical labor, poor dental health, and smoking, based on bone structure and dentition.

Investigators say a key identifying feature is evidence of a prior medical procedure on the right side of the skull. A single Y-shaped titanium plate had been surgically attached to the cranium before death, likely to relieve pressure following a traumatic injury. Authorities believe the distinctive implant could be critical in identifying the individual.

No identification has been made, and the circumstances surrounding the death have not been publicly detailed. The case remains unsolved.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who recognizes the injury or knows someone who underwent a similar cranial procedure and later went missing to come forward. Detectives emphasize that even small details could help advance the investigation.

The case may be especially relevant to longtime area residents, construction or labor workers, or families who lost contact with someone around 2014.
