Critical fire weather conditions are impacting large portions of East Central and Northeast Florida today as the National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings through 6 PM EST Friday. These conditions create a high risk for rapidly spreading wildfires, especially near roadways, grasslands, and wooded corridors.

The warning covers Volusia, Lake, Orange, Seminole, Brevard, Osceola, Okeechobee, Indian River, and St. Lucie counties, along with parts of Northeast and North Central Florida and inland Southeast Georgia. This includes heavily traveled routes such as I-4, I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, I-10, US-1, and State Road 50.

West winds of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph, combined with relative humidity as low as 25%, are creating dangerous fire-spread conditions. Any fire that ignites today may grow quickly and become difficult to control, especially in dry grasses along highways, medians, and rural road shoulders.

Temperatures climbing into the lower to mid-60s will further dry fuels, while ongoing drought conditions across parts of Florida and southern Georgia add to the risk. Officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning, including yard debris, campfires, or equipment that may generate sparks.

Drivers traveling along I-4 between Orlando and Daytona Beach, I-95 from Volusia County south through Brevard and the Treasure Coast, and I-10 near Jacksonville should remain alert for smoke reducing visibility and potential emergency response activity.

A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or imminent. Residents and motorists are urged to stay vigilant, follow local burn restrictions, and report any signs of wildfire immediately.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunset as winds diminish and humidity recovers. Until then, fire safety is essential across the region.
