Patchy freezing drizzle and light snow will continue across Milwaukee and southeast Wisconsin through the remainder of the Friday morning commute, creating slick and potentially hazardous travel conditions, especially on untreated roads. According to the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan, these wintry conditions are expected to linger until around 8 AM CST before gradually improving.
Radar and surface observations indicate pockets of light snow mixed with freezing drizzle, with the greatest impacts occurring on bridges, overpasses, side streets, and untreated surfaces. While widespread heavy snowfall is not expected, even a light glaze of ice can significantly reduce traction and increase the risk of accidents.
Additional snowfall amounts will generally be limited to a dusting, but areas experiencing more persistent freezing drizzle may see a thin ice glaze, particularly during the peak commute window. Motorists traveling along major routes such as I-94, I-43, I-41, Highway 45, and Highway 100 should remain alert for sudden slick spots, especially in shaded or elevated areas.
The primary impact will be slick untreated roads, which may not appear icy at first glance. Visibility issues will be minor compared to heavier snow events, but loss of traction remains the main concern. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations.
Road crews are monitoring conditions, but rapidly changing precipitation types can make treatment challenging. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks, parking lots, and building entrances where ice can form quickly.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve later this morning as precipitation tapers off, though isolated slick spots may persist into the late morning hours. Staying weather-aware and adjusting travel plans can help reduce risk during this brief but impactful winter weather event.
