LOUISVILLE — A fresh surge of cold air moving into the Ohio Valley is bringing increasing chances for snow across Kentucky and southern Indiana tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Louisville. While widespread heavy snowfall is not expected, a dusting of snow is likely in many locations, with localized chances for over one inch developing in parts of the region.
Forecast probability maps show 60 to 80 percent chances of a dusting of snow across much of central Kentucky this evening and overnight. Areas outside of the Bluegrass region — including portions of south-central Kentucky and southwest Indiana — have the best opportunity to see measurable snowfall as colder air deepens overnight.
The probability of greater than one inch of snow remains lower but non-zero. Eastern and northeastern portions of the Louisville forecast area show 20 to 40 percent chances of exceeding one inch, particularly near and east of Interstate 64 and Interstate 75. Locations closer to Interstate 65, the Western Kentucky Parkway, and US-31W are more likely to see a light accumulation or brief snow showers with minimal totals.
Most of the snow is expected to fall this evening through the overnight hours, coinciding with falling temperatures. Road surfaces may briefly become slick, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads, though widespread travel disruptions are not anticipated at this time.
Motorists traveling late tonight or early Saturday should remain alert for isolated slick spots, particularly along I-64, I-65, and I-264 around the Louisville metro. Temperatures will remain cold enough for snow to stick on grassy and elevated surfaces.
Behind this system, colder conditions persist into Saturday morning, with lingering flurries possible before gradually clearing. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, allow extra travel time, and use caution if driving during periods of snowfall.
