GRAND FORKS — Colder air is settling into eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota today as a gusty north wind continues to push temperatures lower across the Red River Valley, creating challenging conditions for travelers and outdoor activities.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, north winds gusting between 25 and 40 mph developed early Friday behind a cold front. These winds, combined with falling temperatures, are producing wind chills ranging from near zero to 10 degrees below zero, especially during the morning hours. Light snow flurries are also possible at times, mainly early in the day.

Travelers along Interstate 29, U.S. Highway 2, and area county roads should be prepared for sudden gusts and brief reductions in visibility, particularly in open rural areas. While widespread snow accumulation is not expected, blowing snow and drifting may occur in exposed locations, especially north and west of Grand Forks.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this afternoon as winds diminish and skies partially clear. Afternoon temperatures will remain cold, generally ranging from the single digits above zero to the teens, before dropping again tonight. Overnight lows are forecast to fall between 5 degrees below zero and 10 above, with lighter winds helping limit additional wind chill impacts.

Looking ahead, Saturday will bring a noticeable change, as south to southeast winds increase and temperatures rebound closer to seasonal normals. Highs Saturday are expected to reach the 20s to lower 30s, with continued moderation into Sunday and early next week. By Sunday and Monday, highs may climb into the upper 30s to lower 40s, signaling a return to milder conditions.

Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and use caution when driving high-profile vehicles during gusty conditions today. While winter is not over, a gradual warming trend will take hold after today’s brief return to colder weather.
