Duluth, Minn. — A lingering wintry mix created slick travel conditions across northeastern Minnesota early Friday, affecting I-35, U.S. 53, and MN 61 as light snow and freezing drizzle persisted through the morning commute.
The National Weather Service in Duluth said light snow showers mixed with drizzle and freezing drizzle continued through Friday morning, leading to icy patches on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Even where snowfall remained light, a thin glaze of ice reduced traction and increased braking distances.
The most immediate impacts focused along I-35 from Hinckley through Duluth, U.S. 53 near Virginia and Eveleth, and MN 61 along the North Shore from Two Harbors to Grand Marais. Officials warned that road conditions varied sharply over short distances, catching drivers off guard.
Communities affected Friday morning include Duluth, Proctor, Cloquet, Two Harbors, Virginia, Hibbing, Grand Rapids, and Hinckley. Visibility remained mostly adequate, but slick pavement created hazardous travel during peak commute hours.
Conditions may briefly improve later Friday, but additional chances for snow and freezing drizzle return Saturday afternoon and night. The Weather Service said another round of wintry mix develops across northeastern Minnesota, with the greatest accumulation potential at the tip of the Arrowhead.
Up to one inch of snow is possible Saturday night near Grand Marais and Grand Portage, with lesser amounts elsewhere. Even light accumulations combined with freezing drizzle may cause renewed slick conditions on MN 61 and secondary roads along the Lake Superior shoreline.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading out. Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and parking areas.
Another chance for wintry precipitation arrives Sunday night, extending the risk for intermittent slick travel into early next week across northeastern Minnesota roadways.
