Minnesota wakes to swirling flakes, rattling wind, and cold that cuts through gloves.
Snow drifts lightly across parts of northeast Minnesota early this morning, brushing roads and sidewalks in and around Duluth. Accumulations stay light, generally under one inch, but slick spots develop quickly, especially near the lake and higher terrain.
Freezing drizzle adds another layer of concern. Thin glaze ice may form on untreated roads and bridges, particularly north of Duluth and toward the Wisconsin border. Even small amounts of ice reduce traction fast. Drivers should slow down and allow extra braking distance on I-35, U.S. 53, and city hills.
Cold air tightens its grip tonight. Temperatures plunge well below zero inland, while strong north winds drive wind chills as low as 25 below zero in the Arrowhead. Exposed skin becomes vulnerable in minutes. Layers, hats, and gloves are essential for anyone outside.
Saturday offers little relief. Skies brighten at times, but highs struggle to reach the teens. Winds ease slightly, though the cold remains sharp. Travel conditions improve during the day, but shaded areas may stay icy.
Saturday night into Sunday turns more active again. Meteorologists are tracking another round of wintry precipitation. Light snow returns, followed by a chance of freezing drizzle Sunday night, especially near Lake Superior. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset.
By Monday, temperatures rebound modestly into the 30s, with mostly cloudy skies. Another light snow chance lingers into Monday night, keeping roads periodically slick.
Looking ahead to the 6โ10 day outlook, a gradual warming trend is possible later next week. Even so, February remains volatile. Snow and ice threats are far from over across northern Minnesota.
Plan extra time for travel today, protect exposed skin tonight, and stay alert through the weekend. Are roads icy where you are this morning?
