Burlington, Vermont – Snow showers and dangerous cold are expected to impact much of Vermont and northern New York this weekend as an Arctic cold front moves through the region late Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, snow showers will develop Friday night into Saturday, producing 1 to 3 inches of snow in most locations. Areas favored for upslope snow, including the western slopes of the Adirondacks and Green Mountains, could see higher totals of 3 to 6 inches by Saturday afternoon.
Snowfall is expected to be generally light to moderate, but periods of steadier snow may affect travel along major routes such as Interstate 89 through the Champlain Valley, US-7 in western Vermont, and US-9 in northeastern New York. Snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are possible during the overnight and early morning hours Saturday.
Behind the cold front, dangerously cold air will surge into the region. The National Weather Service warns that extreme cold temperatures and wind chills will develop Saturday and persist into Sunday. Wind chill values are forecast to drop to 20 to 40 degrees below zero, especially Saturday night into Sunday morning.
These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure. The coldest wind chills are expected in exposed and higher-elevation areas, but even valley locations will experience life-threatening cold.
Travelers along I-89, I-91, US-2, and mountain roadways should be prepared for rapidly worsening conditions, especially if stranded or delayed. The combination of snow, gusty winds, and extreme cold could create hazardous travel across the region.
This weekend weather pattern may significantly affect overnight workers, students, outdoor recreation plans, and long-distance travelers, particularly during the coldest overnight periods.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, protect pets and vulnerable populations, and monitor updated forecasts from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve through the weekend.
