Wilmington, Illinois – Local and county agencies are monitoring ice conditions along the Kankakee River as temperatures rise, warning residents that river ice may become increasingly unstable and dangerous.

According to the Will County Emergency Management Agency, officials are working in coordination with the Wilmington Fire Protection District, Wilmington ESDA, and the National Weather Service to track changing conditions on the river. While no immediate impacts are anticipated, authorities stress that river ice can shift and weaken quickly during periods of warming.

Officials are urging residents to stay off the river and away from shorelines, noting that ice conditions can change without warning. River ice is especially unpredictable compared to lake ice due to fluctuating water levels, currents, and temperature changes beneath the surface.

“Seasonal temperature changes can affect river and ice conditions,” said Deputy Chief Todd Friddle of the Wilmington Fire Protection District. “We encourage residents to use caution, stay informed, and follow guidance from local officials.”

The Will County Emergency Management Agency is recommending several preparedness steps for residents living near the river. These include having at least two ways to receive emergency alerts, such as the Ready Will County app and a NOAA Weather Radio, reviewing household emergency plans, and knowing where to go if conditions change rapidly.

Authorities emphasized that even if ice appears solid, it may not be safe to walk or recreate on, particularly as daytime temperatures rise. First responders note that river rescues during ice events are extremely dangerous and resource-intensive.

Local agencies will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed. Residents are encouraged to rely on official sources for the latest information and avoid unnecessary risks near the Kankakee River.
