Banner Elk, North Carolina – Snow and powerful winds are set to slam the North Carolina High Country late Friday, creating dangerous travel conditions and increasing the risk for power outages across mountain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Friday afternoon through early Saturday for Avery County and for higher elevations above 3,500 feet in Madison, Yancey, and Mitchell counties. Snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are expected across Avery County, with localized totals reaching up to 6 inches near the Tennessee border. Winds could gust as high as 65 mph, especially along exposed ridges.
In Avery County, including Banner Elk, Newland, and Ingalls, snowfall combined with strong winds is expected to quickly cover roads and reduce visibility during the Friday evening commute. Blowing and drifting snow may make travel difficult overnight, while falling trees or power lines could lead to scattered outages.
Above 3,500 feet in Madison, Yancey, and Mitchell counties, snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with higher amounts near the state line. Gusty winds will add to the hazards, increasing the chance of tree damage and difficult driving conditions on mountain roads.
Wind chills are expected to drop to around 5 degrees below zero early Saturday, making outdoor conditions dangerous. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, slow down on snow-covered roads, and check road conditions before heading out. Advisories remain in effect through early Saturday, with conditions expected to gradually improve later in the morning.
