Chicago, Illinois – Nearly 194,000 handheld clothing steamers sold nationwide are being recalled due to a serious burn hazard, prompting safety warnings for Illinois consumers.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Aterian Inc. has recalled PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers and PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers after reports that the devices can expel hot water from the steam nozzle during use, posing a risk of burn injuries.

The recall affects about 75,400 PurSteam Elite Travel Steamers and approximately 119,000 PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamers. The recalled products were sold online through PurSteam.com, Amazon, and Walmart between December 2020 and April 2025, with prices ranging from about $11 to $35 depending on the model.

Officials report more than 470 incidents involving hot water being expelled from the steamers. At least 54 burn injuries have been documented, including two second-degree burns, according to recall data. Additional incidents were reported before Aterian acquired the PurSteam brand in December 2020.

The PurSteam Elite Travel Steamer (model PS-510) is white with a triangular steam vent opening, while the PurSteam Mighty Lil Steamer (model PS-550) features an oblong-shaped steam vent. Model numbers and date codes are printed on labels located on the bottom of the units.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled steamers. To receive a full refund, users must submit a recall request at recall.pursteam.com, provide contact information, and cut the steamer’s power cord before uploading a photo as proof. Some consumers may be asked to return the product using prepaid shipping.

The recall was officially issued Wednesday, and officials say the action is intended to prevent further injuries, particularly in households, dorms, and among frequent travelers and young workers who commonly use compact steamers.
