Jackson, Kentucky – Increasing clouds today will give way to precipitation on Friday, with a rain and snow mix transitioning to all snow overnight, creating potential travel hazards across eastern Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Forecasters say precipitation will begin during the daytime hours Friday as a mix of rain and snow. As colder air moves into the region Friday night, the precipitation is expected to change over to all snow, particularly east of Interstate 75. Minor snow accumulations are possible, especially at higher elevations and in far eastern counties.

Road conditions may deteriorate overnight as temperatures drop into the teens and lower 20s. Snow-covered and slick spots are most likely on secondary roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces along travel corridors such as I-75, U.S. 23, U.S. 119, and KY-15.

The National Weather Service reports precipitation chances rising to 80–90 percent Friday before tapering off early Saturday morning. Snow chances will linger into Saturday morning before ending, followed by colder temperatures behind the system. Highs on Saturday are expected to remain in the upper teens to near 30 degrees, limiting melting.

Drivers traveling overnight or during the early Saturday commute are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and watch for rapidly changing road conditions. Even light snow amounts can create hazardous driving conditions when temperatures fall quickly.

The greatest impacts are expected in eastern Kentucky counties, where terrain and elevation can enhance snowfall totals. Western portions of the region may see more rain with limited accumulation.

This alert is especially relevant for overnight workers, early-morning commuters, and students traveling Saturday morning.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and roadway conditions as this system moves through the region.
