Blacksburg, Virginia – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for western Greenbrier County in West Virginia as heavy snow and strong winds threaten travel from Friday morning through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, snowfall totals between 3 and 5 inches are possible across the western portion of the county, including the communities of Duo, Rainelle, and Quinwood. Winds may gust as high as 60 miles per hour during the storm period.
Forecasters say the combination of falling snow and strong winds could significantly reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions. Travel could become very difficult at times, with impacts expected to increase during the Friday evening commute as conditions deteriorate.
Strong wind gusts may also lead to tree damage, particularly in higher elevations and exposed areas. While power outages were not specifically mentioned, officials note that high winds can increase the risk of infrastructure damage during winter storms.
Residents are advised to closely monitor forecast updates as the event approaches, as snow totals and impacts may change. Officials recommend allowing extra time for travel, preparing vehicles for winter conditions, and adjusting plans if conditions worsen.
This system is part of a broader winter weather pattern affecting portions of the central Appalachians, with multiple winter storm watches in effect across nearby counties.
